SUNDAY - ARRIVAL QUITO
In Quito, you're only a stone's throw south of the equator. Yet the weather is quite pleasant due to the altitude. The first thing you'll notice is its natural beauty - the city sits at the base of the Pichincha Volcano, surrounded by striking dark-green mountains. This creates a fabulous backdrop for memorable photos! Greeting by Simon Bolivar's homestay staff in airport lobby. Drive to the school where you'll be introduced to your host families.

About your host family:
Middle class host families are carefully selected and monitored by the staff at Simon Bolivar. All host families are within walking distance of the school. Full board is provided. Bring family photos and community mementos to serve as conversational starters. Everyone is expected to practice their Spanish in the home and to dedicate at least one hour nightly to class preparation. Participants normally share with one other student of the same language ability.

MONDAY-FRIDAY
Simon Bolivar is recognized by the Ministry of Education. The school is centrally located in one of the nicer Quito neighborhoods. Small groups of 2-6 students meet for four hours daily with certified Spanish teachers. Study in a nice colonial style building with courtyards which serve as a place to study and gather during breaks.

The following half day are included:

  • Monday - Guided City Tour
  • Tuesday - Visit a local high school
  • Wednesday - Cooking lessons
  • Thursday - Participate in our exclusive SOMOS humanitarian total experience. You'll receive a list of the most needed items and visit a local 'super', where you'll have an opportunity to purchase those supplies (budget $15 each). Complete your SOMOS experience as you interact with the children while painting, gardening, etc.
  • Friday - Certificates of Participation.
SATURDAY - OTAVALO
Depart early morning for your drive through spectacular mountain scenery on your guided excursion to the famous Otavalo Indian Market. In marked contrast to most markets, here the Otavalenos barter in stark silence. Stroll the narrow cobblestone streets as you strike your best bargain - in silence, of course.

SUNDAY - MITAD DEL MUNDO
Guided excursion to Mitad del Mundo, the Equator Line Monument, where you can have a famous photo taken of yourself with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern Hemisphere. Stop on the way for a breathtaking view of the Pululahua Crater, the largest in the world.
